About

My teaching approach, whether in the studio or the classroom, focuses on music while taking into account the whole picture of a musical education. I strive to create an environment that is positive, engaging, and challenging. I encourage students to take an active role in their own growth.

In the studio setting, my focus is the development of technical skills and musicianship. I frequently draw on material students are working on in other courses, such as music history or theory, and other disciplines, such as art or psychology to help bring the music to life. Students maintain busy schedules, so I teach them to maximize their practice time by developing effective and efficient practice habits. Because many of my students will eventually teach music in some capacity, I encourage them to think like teachers in both the studio and the classroom. I ask them to think about how they would tackle a technical or interpretive problem with their students and then apply that to their own practice sessions. I encourage them to take a new theoretical or historical piece of information and think about how it applies to a piece they are working on in private lessons.
